“Farm boy, physician, and stargazer – the life of Dr Richard Bangay of Holt’ – Amanda Howe – November 2025

Amanda gave a well received talk on Richard Bangay, an extraordinary Norfolk man, who lived from 1834 – 1933. Amanda told us that during that time, he moved from an impoverished childhood through work on farms and down mines into becoming a physician. He also worked as a ship’s doctor, then as a successful general practitioner. Richard lived in many places and countries, and continued to work into his 90s. He also became well known as an amateur astronomer, owning his own observatory and being elected to the British Astronomical Association in 1905.
